Construction of the church in Neo-Classicist style began in 1836, based on the plans of Antal Fruhmann, the excellent and renowned architect. It was built on the spot where the first known church of the Lutheran congregation had stood. Construction took 5 years. This place of worship is the second largest in Győr and is considered to be a representative example of classicist architectural history. The construction of the church was financed by the city and the congregation. This was not unusual in those times, as the city was the patron of the church. This is why the city's coat of arms was placed above the main altar. This placement is unique not only in Győr but also throughout the country. The church organ was made from 1852 to 1854 planned and built by Károly Klöckner, the organ has historical monument status and is considered to be among the most beautiful sounding church organs.

The Serbian Orthodox community of Győr erected the church, which is a combination of different styles, in 1727. The tower stands in front of a beautiful arched facade. The sanctum is buttressed as well and enclosed with three sides of the octagonal shape.

Its attractive, well-proportioned onion dome was damaged at the end of World War II and restored in 1963 based on the plans of Barna Káldy. The church's exceptionally valuable elements are the Louis Seize style framed iconostasis and the also Louis Seize row of pews. As by the end of the 19th century the majority of the Greek and Serbian Orthodox congregations had died out, the Serbian Orthodox church's assets were handed over to the state and beginning with the Rákosi era, the Serbian church stood alone for a long time. Finally, at the request of the Greek Orthodox congregation, the Serbian Orthodox church gave the building to the Greek Orthodox Diocese of Győr in 1997, who have been holding their worship services here since.
